Baby taken by dogs

An American mother and father have spoken for the first time about the night their dog carried their newborn baby into the woods.

Michael and Chrissie Smith's ordeal began as they were baby proofing their home in Kentucky, while their child AJ napped upstairs.

They realised the house had gone quiet, and when they went to investigate, the back door was wide open.

Mrs Smith told WKLY, "I opened the bedroom door and you can see directly into, that the back door was open. I saw the back door. I ran. I saw the blanket on the floor which I had wrapped him up in."

"When I heard her scream, I immediately got up because it was a horrible scream and I knew something had happened," said Michael. "She yelled, 'They got him,' or something like that."

The parents say they immediately suspected that Dokata, one of their three dogs, had taken the child away.

He had a habit of hiding things in the woods.

They called 911 and heard the baby scream.

"Obviously, it's every parent's worst fear, you can just imagine, a dog eating your baby," Michael told WLKY news.

They say they ran into the woods, and found Dakota first, and then their baby.

When Michael Smith finally found AJ, he was bleeding on the ground, suffering from two collapsed lungs, broken ribs, and a fractured skull.

Four months later he has almost fully recovered, and only has a scar on his cheek.

Their dog Dakota, who was taken by animal control after the attack, has found a new family.
